CHAPTER SEVEN

Gunfire pelted the cabin. Bullets tore though the thick logs and penetrated the interior near the ceiling. It was a barrage of ammunition, and Rafe had no doubt that it was coming from at least three automatic weapons.

Somehow, he managed to get the bathroom door open, and he shoved Anna into the pitch-black hallway, away from the windows. He followed on top of her, sheltering her from the flying debris.

“What should we do?” she yelled.

“Stay down until Sheldon and the others intervene.”

It wasn’t much of a plan, but at the moment it was the only one Rafe had. He had to trust that the team positioned at the end of the road would soon respond, and that the trained combat specialists along with Sheldon could put a stop to what was happening. If not, if the primary defense failed, he was armed and ready for a secondary assault.

Rafe resisted the instinct to join the fight then and there. He didn’t dare leave Anna alone and unprotected. Instead, he forced himself to concentrate on the method of attack itself. Simple but effective. A light aircraft. Three armed men parachuting into the area at night. They were likely members of Quivira’s group of rebels. God knows how they’d managed to avoid the detection equipment to get this close, but later he’d find out how they had accomplished it.

He listened to the sound of the striking bullets. And studied the pattern. There was no breaking glass. No concentration of gunfire in the bathroom, where the only light had been on only moments earlier. Just the nonstop blasts of lead through wood.

And that told Rafe loads about their situation.

The gunmen obviously weren’t aiming to kill, so that didn’t leave many possibilities. They either wanted him. Or Anna. Or both. But they wanted them alive. That meant they were using the gunfire as a distraction and were probably already closing in on the cabin.

“Where the devil are you, Sheldon?” Rafe called out. He levered himself up slightly in case he had to fire.

“Nearby,” Sheldon barked into the earpiece.

“Hold your horses. I’m trying to establish position here.”

Easier said than done. It riled Rafe to the core that the rebels had put Anna’s life in danger. Any one of those bullets could ricochet and hurt her or the baby. In hindsight he could see that bringing her here to the cabin had been a huge mistake. Too bad it’d taken hindsight for him to figure out that one.

“Rafe?” he heard someone say in the earpiece. Not Sheldon this time but Luke Buchanan. “We’re coming in. Stay down.”

“No plans to do otherwise,” Rafe assured him.

The gunfire assault continued. It was deafening, but Rafe tried to pick through it and figure out the positions of the rebels. North was his guess. They were clustered on the north side of the cabin. The side that faced the bathroom.

He heard the counterattack a moment later. Buchanan and Sheldon had obviously arrived. Still, the rebels didn’t stop firing. Beneath him, he felt Anna’s whole body tremble.
